One thing that I learned from last year, was to slow down the pace. Sometimes we get so caught up in life that we forget to appreciate what is around us. I have always been a believer in reflective practice. The time and memories spent with your loved ones are priceless. We all need to take a break. A break away from home, different scenery, unplug and recharge. A few weeks ago our little family packed up and headed out to White Bridge Farm Accommodation. When I first looked at their website this stood out to me.

Whether you are looking for an adventurous break away or simply want to enjoy the birds and nature or need accommodation to attend an event, let “White bridge farm” be your choice of destination.  Recharge your soul and rediscover romance – a holiday at the farm will add years to your life and reconnect you with what is important in life.

Both the husband and I have been running a race since December and well into January. This was exactly what our little family needed. Keep in mind this was also the first time we went away as a family of four. My biggest concern was, did we pack in everything for the boys? but I soon just took a step back and learned to just take deep breaths and that all that matter was, that we would all be together.

The farm is about a 90 minute scenic drive from Cape Town. This is definitely a drive where you will experience being surround by beautiful mountains and nature. We took a slow drive, just as the boys fell asleep. The accommodation is situated on a working fruit farm, on the banks of the Breede River. Choose between the self-catering cottage, river cabins and river cottage. The farm produces a variety of fruit for the export market – world class pears, plums, nectarines and vegetables. We would have loved to stay in one of the river cabins, but the second bedroom is upstairs, and Hudson would probably have kept us on our toes the entire weekend, by wanting to climb the ladder.

Dixon’s View & Otters Landing

These two open plan design river cabins sleep 4 people each.  They are beautifully constructed from natural resources such as timber, stone and bamboo and both have lovely decks over the bank of the river.  The  impressive “Dixons Peak” looms overhead across the river.

The accommodation consists of a double bed in each unit and two single futons in the loft area of Dixons View and a double futon in the loft area of Otters Landing. The cabins are equipped with fridge, microwave oven, a two plate stove and all the little extras that a normal kitchen requires.  There is also a beautiful fireplace in each and braai facilities  outside.  Linen and towels are supplied.  These cabins are very popular for their situation, charm and atmosphere that they provide.

Whiskey Yankee

We stayed in the beautiful and rustic cottage called Whiskey Yankee. Click the link for a little tour. This is a larger unit, that has a full bathroom (shower and bath), queen size bed, a double bunk bed and a single couch bed in the lounge.  It is ideal for a family of  4 or 5 people.  Crisp white linen is always a bonus for me, and when we entered the room, all I wanted to do was just fall into bed and roll a round like a five year old. The cottage also has a beautiful wooden deck that faces the mountains. It is the perfect setting for morning coffee or brunch. Hudson and I played with his puzzles. It is just the perfect spot to sit, relax and enjoy all that nature has to offer. There is also an indoor fireplace, which is the perfect addition to cold winter nights. And outdoor braai facilities.  The kitchen is fully equipped with fridge, microwave oven, two plate stove and all the little extras that a normal kitchen requires. We were met with a jar or jam, and I can only recall having had one piece of toast with jam, Daniel devoured the rest. The farm also boasts the beautiful venue Olive Rock If you are looking for an events or wedding venue, then this is the perfect one.

Inspired by its sweeping natural surrounds, the design incorporates a simple yet elegant multilevel space that comfortably accommodates both intimate gatherings and private functions with up to 200 guests.

R1100.00 per unit per night for  2  people or

R1200.00 per unit per night from 3 up to max  5 people

We experienced some load shedding during our stay and it honestly did not affect us at all. I loved that we could leave the front door open for Hudson to run outside and ride his bike if he wanted to. Something that we can not do at home. The time away surrounded by beautiful mountains, made me realize that we do need time for ourselves, to recharge. But most importantly to spend the time with our family. I can not recommend White Bridge Farm Accommodation enough.
